Overview
England Football introduced its Future Fit programme for the 2026/27 season — a new grassroots youth football framework now in effect. The main purpose is to keep children in smaller-sided formats for longer so they get more touches of the ball, more involvement in the game, and more age-appropriate development opportunities.
For clubs, the biggest structural change is a revised format pathway: U7 plays 3v3, 11v11 begins at U14, and every stage in between has shifted up by one year. This has practical implications for fixtures, coaching, equipment, pitch-marking, facility use and parent communications.
New age-group pathway
England Football's updated pathway for the 2026/27 season is set out below, alongside the format clubs are moving away from under the previous pathway. Key changes are highlighted in bold. Ball sizes are confirmed for each age group and are included for equipment planning purposes.
| Age group | New format from 2026/27 | Previous format | Ball size from 2026/27 | Previous ball size |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| U7 | 3v3 | 5v5 | Size 3 | Size 3 |
| U8 | 5v5 | 5v5 | Size 3 | Size 3 |
| U9 | 5v5 | 7v7 | Size 3 | Size 3 |
| U10 | 7v7 | 7v7 | Size 3 | Size 3 |
| U11 | 7v7 | 9v9 | Size 3 | Size 3/4 |
| U12 | 9v9 | 9v9 | Size 4 | Size 4 |
| U13 | 9v9 | 11v11 | Size 4 | Size 4 |
| U14 | 11v11 | 11v11 | Size 5 | Size 4 |
| U15-U16 | 11v11 | 11v11 | Size 5 | Size 5 |
The key format changes clubs are moving away from are:
- U7 moving from 5v5 to 3v3
- U9 staying at 5v5 instead of progressing to 7v7
- U11 staying at 7v7 instead of moving to 9v9
- U13 staying at 9v9 instead of moving to 11v11
On ball sizes, the most notable change is at U11, where the transition from Size 3/4 to a standardised Size 3 reflects the smaller 7v7 format being retained for longer. U14-U16 moves to a confirmed Size 5, replacing the previous Size 4/5 split. All other age groups remain consistent with the previous standard.
Pitch and goal requirements
England Football's Future Fit guidance updates the recommended pitch and goal sizes to align with each age-group format. The table below shows the new set-up; rows in purple indicate where the format has changed.
| Age group | Format | New pitch size | New goal size |
|---|---|---|---|
| U7 | 3v3 | 15x10m to 20x15m | 4x2.5ft |
| U8 | 5v5 | 27x18m to 37x27m | 12x6ft |
| U9 | 5v5 | 27x18m to 37x27m | 12x6ft |
| U10 | 7v7 | 46x27m to 55x37m | 12x6ft |
| U11 | 7v7 | 46x27m to 55x37m | 12x6ft |
| U12 | 9v9 | 64x37m to 73x46m | 16x7ft |
| U13 | 9v9 | 64x37m to 73x46m | 16x7ft |
| U14 | 11v11 | 82x46m to 91x55m | 21x7ft |
| U15-U16 | 11v11 | 82x46m to 100x64m | 24x8ft |
U14 sits at the bottom of the 11v11 range with goals at 21x7ft, stepping up to 24x8ft at U15. Clubs with limited space may need to review how smaller pitches are overlaid across the same site on a matchday, particularly as more younger age groups remain in smaller-sided environments for longer.
U7 3v3 introduction
One of the most significant changes is the introduction of 3v3 football at U7, replacing the previous 5v5 entry point. England Football's rationale is that smaller formats increase opportunities for each child to engage with the ball, make decisions, and stay physically active during games.
For clubs, this change is likely to affect squad organisation, coach deployment, scheduling and parent expectations. It also creates a need for more small-sided pitch layouts and appropriately sized goals.
The structure for 3v3 matchdays is also different from what clubs are used to. Key points for planning:
- Match length: Individual games last between 6 and 10 minutes.
- Structure: Multiple short games in a carousel format, providing 30 to 40 minutes of total playing time per child.
- Squad size: England Football recommends a matchday squad of 6 to 12 players, with no substitutes. Every child plays for the maximum time possible.
- Officials: No match official is required. A pitch facilitator supports each playing area, encouraging positive play and helping children understand the rules.
Match management and playing time
England Football has updated game restarts across age groups to keep the ball in play for longer, with a wider shift toward formats that reduce stoppages and maximise active playing time.
Match durations for all age groups other than U7 remain unchanged from the current season. A full breakdown of formats and durations by age group is available on the Age Group Templates page.
Clubs should always check match duration against the relevant competition or County FA guidance before communicating to members.
Operational implications for clubs
Clubs should expect to review several areas before the start of the 2026/27 season.
- Equipment stock — ball sizes and goal sizes across youth age groups, particularly at U7 (new 4x2.5ft goals required), U11 and U14-U16.
- Pitch layout plans — how many 3v3 and 5v5 areas can be marked or coned on existing sites alongside larger format pitches.
- Fixture scheduling — younger age groups may require more simultaneous small playing areas rather than fewer larger pitches on a single matchday.
- Coach and parent communication — families will need clear, early communication about why format changes are being introduced and what a 3v3 matchday looks like in practice.
- League and competition alignment — local implementation details may be phased through leagues and County FAs, with supporting workshops and guidance available.
Recommended club actions
To prepare effectively, clubs should take the following steps over the coming planning cycle.
- Audit every youth team by age group against the new Future Fit format pathway and note where the old transition point no longer applies.
- Review current ball stock and replace where age-group sizing changes — particularly at U11 (Size 3), U14 (Size 5, up from Size 4) and the U15-U16 step to confirmed Size 5.
- Confirm portable goal availability for 3v3, 5v5, 7v7 and 9v9 environments. Note that 3v3 requires 4x2.5ft goals.
- Re-map home venue layouts to accommodate more smaller-sided pitches, including multiple 3v3 areas.
- Brief coaches and team managers on the new pathway and the developmental reasons behind each change.
- Update club handbooks, website copy and parent FAQs before pre-season registration opens.
Suggested wording for members
The following wording can be adapted for a club newsletter, website update or parent email.
From the 2026/27 season, England Football has introduced its Future Fit youth football framework. This means younger players stay in smaller-sided formats for longer, with U7s playing 3v3, U8-U9s playing 5v5, U10-U11s playing 7v7, U12-U13s playing 9v9, and 11v11 football beginning at U14. The changes are designed to give children more touches of the ball, more involvement in matches, and a better developmental experience. We will share more detail on what this means for each age group as the season progresses.
Planning note
The direction of travel is clear: England Football has reshaped the grassroots pathway around smaller formats, later transitions to the full game, and more development-focused match environments. Clubs that acted early on facilities, equipment and communication are already seeing the benefit. For those still mid-implementation, the pathway is now fixed and the resources here cover everything you need to align.
